An excellent book for beginners and old sewers...Great pictures, compact instructions, includes info not found in many sewing books, like the different fabrics available. I have purchased 3 books and am giving them to young beginners as a quide book for their lessons that they will receive as they enter into the wonderful world of sewing.I am a sewer of 67 years of experience sewing many different garments, costumes, quilting and home dec. This is my number one reference book for teaching sewing.For the price you can not beat it....Share with your friends.

This book was “okay” but expected more as I’m a novice sewer.

I use this book for my sewing classes for refugees. It is very well written with minimal text and maximum photos of steps. My students with limited English find this book very easy to use.

Perfect, just what I wanted

First off, I want to say that I absolutely love the content of this book. It is very comprehensive, and would be beneficial for anyone wanting to sew. For beginning sewers it helps to teach them tips and techniques to learn the craft, and for advanced individuals it provides reminders of things they may have learned at one time or more efficient ways to do what they already know. I consider myself as someone with intermediate experience and will find this book very valuable indeed. Alison Smith wrote a great book.The problem I have with this book isn't the writing or the content, it is the format. It is almost impossible to read. The publishers have used pages with a image of fabric on each page, which wouldn't be so bad by itself, but they combined it with an artistic narrow small font for the text. I don't have "old" eyes, but the combination of the background with the font gives me a headache trying to get through it. The 'look inside' feature Amazon has doesn't really illustrate how bad it is (they seemed to darken it up a little for the example).I urge you to find this in a bookstore before you buy to see if the paper/font combination works for you. I eagerly await the publication of the second edition of this book to see if the publishing house revises what an injustice they did to an otherwise outstanding book.

This is the ultimate bible for novice and beginner seamstresses, tailors and those who just love to sew. I was a little skeptical as to what book to buy, as there are so many, and after trawling through loads of reviews and items, I decided on this one. It is clear, easy to read and has an informative section at the front telling you what basics you should have in your sewing kit, the different properties and weaves of fabric and also which needles and thread to use on it. It also has a section on patterns, which has enlightened me a lot as I tended not to work to them as I thought they were more hassle than they were worth. This arrived today and I love it! I’m a complete beginner with a sewing machine but this book was so informative and easy to follow it felt like I had a sewing teacher by my side. I also love the fact it showed things like sewing on lace and trimmings as I like to customise my clothes. Even instructions on making self covered buttons which i will definitely be doing!! There are no projects but I can tell this is a sewing bible that I will return to again again, both for machine and hand sewing. Very happy 😊.
