Isn't this creating an ac output, both positive and negative? wouldn't the negative swings be bad/damaging to the arduino?

Checking it with an oscilloscope, the negative swing seems to be clamped, probably by the diode and resistor circuit on the board, although I haven't traced the circuit out to be sure.
