Amazing
I love this book! It definitely should be used for 3rd grade and up though if you’re a teacher and I’d read it before you read it to your kids at home because they do mention some heavy topics.

Vibrant simple illustrations cover Black history nicely. It starts with March 5th, 1770 when African American Crispus Attucks was shot by the British. This became one of the sparks for the Revolutionary War. This book tells of the Plessy verses Ferguson decision, Harriet Tubman, Madam C.J. Walker, and Bessie Coleman. Later it speaks of Jesse Owens, Marian Anderson, Jackie Robinson, and Brown verses the Board of Education. Towards the end of the book Rosa Parks is introduced, as well as, Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, Wilma Rudolph, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. The end wraps up the book introducing us to Thurgood Marshall, Shirley Chisholm, Hank Aaron, Nelson Mandela, Barack Obama, and Oprah Winfrey. I love the ending where it asks the children, "Will others follow you into battle to defend liberty, will today be the day you add to history? Today is the day, today is to be." It gets the children thinking about their part in the American story. It is a 6.6 Accelerated Reader quiz level.

Every bookshelf needs this book!
This is a great teaching tool for kindergarten to high school. It gives a brief synopsis of each person which is a great jumping off point to research further. I know I learned about peopleI’d never heard of and also learned more about those I did. It’s designed for Black History Month but honestly is a wonderful resource year round.

Fabulous book on great black American influencers
Fabulous book to bring awareness to some exceptional African American influencers in the history of our country. And not the same usual black Americans we all have already heard of. There are so many more in history that children should be learning about! My 9 year old son loved it!

Preface young kids about language
Love this book. As a teacher, I used it in a 4th grade classroom and this past year in an 8th grade classroom. You do need to preface young kids about the use of the word “negro” and it’s meaning and background; but I believe that’s all a part of students learning about black history, whether they’re black, white, or in between.

Highly Recommended for Classrooms
I bought this book for my 6th grade science students. It pairs nicely with other books I've bought on scientists, inventors, and influential women, African Americans, Hispancs, Asians, and more.PROS: The poems are creative for kids to read. The poem for Barack Obama on Day 28 is my personal favorite. The illustrations are nicely done, and the pages are colorful. The paragraph excerpts on what really happened at the bottom of each page are important. This book is a nice way for kids to learn about African American men and women.CONS: None
