Product Description The reunited three musketeers team up to rescue a mysterious masked prisoner held in the bastille. desertcart.com Footnotes in movie books are likely to reduce this swashbuckling adventure down to a simple description: it was the first movie to star Leonardo DiCaprio after the phenomenal success of Titanic. As such it automatically attracted a box-office stampede of Leo's young female fans, but critical reaction was deservedly mixed. Having earned his directorial debut after writing the Oscar-winning script for Mel Gibson's Braveheart, Randall Wallace wrote and directed this ambitious version of the often-filmed classic novel by Alexandre Dumas. DiCaprio plays dual roles as the despotic King Louis XIV, who rules France with an iron fist, and the king's twin brother, Philippe, who languishes in prison under an iron mask, his identity concealed to prevent an overthrow of Louis' throne. But Louis' abuse of power ultimately enrages Athos (John Malkovich), one of the original Four Musketeers, who recruits his former partners (Gabriel Byrne, Gérard Depardieu, and Jeremy Irons) in a plot to liberate Philippe and install him as the king's identical replacement. Once this plot is set in motion and the Musketeers are each given moments in the spotlight, the film kicks into gear and offers plenty of entertainment in the grand style of vintage swashbucklers. But it's also sidetracked by excessive length and disposable subplots, and for all his post-Titanic star power, the boyish DiCaprio just isn't yet "man" enough to be fully convincing in his title role. Still, this is an entertaining movie, no less enjoyable for falling short of the greatness to which it aspired. --Jeff Shannon Review: OMG, how great each actor is in this Musketeer/King classic movie! - I have watched this since the late 90's and never grow tired of this classic movie. The renowned Musketeers reunite for one last epic battle. They are played by Gabriel Byrne, John Malkovich, Jeremy Irons & Gerard Depardieu who are at their finest, nobelist & best acting. Leonardo DiCaprio is excellent playing King Louis XIV, an arrogant, vile, egoist who rules France while his twin brother was locked up in a horrible prison as a child and forced to wear an iron mask so no one can recognize him or allow him to be a royal. This story is riveting to the end that you don't expect. GREAT MOVIE! DVD arrived on time and played perfectly. Review: DiCaprio and The Musketeers Shine In A Great Adventure Movie - 'The Man In The Iron Mask' was released about a month after the global box office and Academy Award winning 'Titanic' in the middle of Leo Mania. In fact the weekend of it's release, 'The Man In The Iron Mask' and 'Titanic' tied each other for the #1 spot in the North American box office, giving Leonardo DiCaprio the two biggest movies in America. And although "The Man In The Iron Mask' made over $180 million dollars at the worldwide box office, it was overshadowed by the once in a lifetime experience that was 'Titanic'. Now 'The Man In The Iron Mask' is not as great and classic of a film as 'Titanic' but it is still a great and fun movie. It has an outstanding cast with Oscar winners DiCaprio and Jeremy Irons along with great performances from John Malkovich, Gérard Depardieu, and Gabriel Byrne. DiCaprio does a great job playing duel roles as the evil King Louis XIV and his good twin brother who has been hidden in the mask. As The Musketeers attempt to replace King Louis XIV with his twin: action, adventure, humor, and great drama ensue. Overall great acting, great costumes, great set designs, and a whole lot of fun lead to a wonderful film that can be watched over and over. All for one and one for all.

The Musketeers Uncover a Mystery, and (spoiler alert) Change History . . .
The eternal battle between good and evil - it's always a joy to see good (spoiler alert) win, especially in a manner you did not see coming. This DVD accomplishes it through action - packed drama, mystery, friendship and friendship seemingly betrayed, love, and even humor played against the historical perspective of the "Sun King's" reign, the famous Musketeers and the years leading up to the French Revolution. Superb acting by the entire cast, lead by Leonardo DiCaprio (whom I don't even like that much), French actor Gérard Depardieu, Gabriel Byrne and John Malkovich (plus a brief appearance by "Dr. House") and a well written screen play that keeps us guessing, surprised, moved (and amused) and to very end. I watched this video about 4 times (when it was free) and bought it (when it was no long free) when I realized what an upbeat and on-going inspiration it was going to be for me. A terrific movie with an eternal theme . . .

Inspiring
It was a clean movie, without all the F bombs and profanity in todays cinema. That was refreshing. The story is memorable and compelling and hanky worthy at the end. There is no better story than a musketeer story. It embodies all that is good; courage, loyalty, faithfulness, brotherhood, talent, justice and more. We need more movies like that these days.

A simply splendid version of the famous book, and I do not agree with the assessment of someone that di Caprio is not up to the part. He plays his 2 characters extremely well. As I've seen commented before somewhere, this is definitely the best ever depiction of Aramis who is in the book the plotter, which Athos joins him after bitter disappointment in the King's selfish and cruel behaviour towards his (Athos's) adopted son which leads to the death of the young man. It seems that Dumas was not keen on these kings, so his idea to use the Man in the Iron Mask myth as a theme is one that many readers will identify with. The comment above on the plot and acting that I've just referred to is not entirely accurate. D'Artagnan is told about the plot by Aramis and the other two backing him, and d'Artagnan will not take part in it. He has his own very important reasons for protecting the King even though that King is such a jerk. However, there are matters about the Man in the Iron Mask which d'Artagnan does not know. It is Aramis who has been in on the secret for many years through being in a certain place at a certain time. This movie doesn't follow the original book in all respects, only in some. But for me it is a much more exciting version even than the book. I've no doubt Dumas could never have used the most important variation, but that was then, and the movie has been made now.
