BMW R/90-S Flat Twin Engine Model Kit with Collector's Manual

Met or exceeded my expectations for quality, ease, and beauty. Quality - Mostly great. No missing parts. Only three small fit issues. (1) one gear needed to have its center hole bored out. Not a big deal, took two minutes with a hand drill. (2) one mounting tab for one valve rocker was bent too tight, keeping the valve from closing. I put that head on the non-display side of the engine. (3) The gearbox shifting action is iffy. Lots of thin plastic parts with loose fit. Be deliberate but careful and it mostly works. Ease - Instructions were clear and detailed. Great diagrams, good pointers for routing, alignment, and sprue trimming. Beauty - All parts have fantastic surface quality. The chrome exhaust really shines, all the translucent panels are clear to see through and don't distort things. Final note - It doesn't have a clutch.

The quality and precision of the molded pieces was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t have any issues with assembly, the pieces fit together perfectly. The quality of the instructions reminded me of the factory manuals I use to maintain my own BMW R90S. The whole assembly will take about 3 to 4 hours at a comfortable pace and few breaks. The book included was filled with interesting facts about the history of the boxer engine and the R90S. Being an owner of an R90S I was particularly drawn to this model because of the advertised accuracy. The engine housing and gearbox are see through and you can see the relationship between all the internal components. The ‘spark plugs’ light up or fire in the correct timing. There is even an alignment tool that ensures that the timing belt is installed with the pistons and flywheel in the correct positions so that the spark plug fires when the piston is in the right position. To top it all off, the gearbox actually shifts between gears including neutral! I would recommend this to anyone regardless of your skill level. The most difficult aspect of this project is removing the waste plastic where it’s attached to the mold remnants. I’d advise a pair of electrical wire snips that cuts all the way to the tip to cut parts free then trim them with a razor utility knife. The plastic is too thick to cut safely with just a utility knife. Be careful not to get fingerprints on the inside of the clear plastic. These can’t be removed once assembled. I can go on and on praising this product, in summary this is an extremely well designed, precision, functioning model that does an excellent job exhibiting the internal relationship between the moving components of a boxer engine and transmission.

I've had BMW bikes with boxer motors since 1975, including the R90, and am very familiar with the engines and transmissions. This model is very realistic, inside and out, and is actually is as good as it looks online; it did not disappoint. Very well made, great precision. Everything fits. The transmission even shifts through all five gears. I put mine together in three evenings. It even comes with a very nice coffee table book about the history of the BMW bikes, and the assembly instructions are also in this book. The only tool you need to provide is a pair of nippers (I used a sharp pair of flush diagonal cutters, which worked well). The kit includes a small Philips screw driver, which did the job nicely. Everything is held together with small screws of one size. No glue required.

This is an outstanding product. All parts were included, instructions were excellent, finished product is just as beautiful as described and pictured. It would have easily earned a Five-Star rating, EXCEPT..... As shown in the attached picture, the wire leading from the Distributor to the rear of the Console (which operates the Piston Lights) is just over 11" long. But 11" is not long enough. It needs to be AT LEAST another inch longer....and two inches longer would be ideal. So I can't give it the FIVE STARS it deserves unless there is a resolution to this problem.

So much fun putting this together. The book that comes with it is gorgeous, and the instructions are perfectly clear. As a long time BMW R65 rider putting this motor together was a real joy, and the fact that it runs, with working gearbox, is just insane. So fun, took about 2 hours taking my time.

What a great build! Very well made, no missing parts, all mechanical parts worked beautifully, and all part were perfect fits! Really loved how good the accurate the transmission works. Highly recommend this build. My only complaint is I finished it too quick for someone who loves the build

This would be a nice kit, but I am missing the two 68mm by 0.018inch flattened shafts to rotate the gears. Franzis website does not allow emails and an obvious show of not wanting to reply to customers. Do not waste your time spending a couple hours of build time ( with your kid) to only find missing parts and no easy means to obtain them. No customer service. what a waste.

all parts are easy to use. clean them off with a xacto or fine blade. this engine is very correct for a BMW Airhead of the era, even the dipstick is there. once assembled, it works as described. the included book is full of history facts the instructions are excellent, including the parts list and cross referenced list. of course, because it's designed by Germans. it's great. very fun and a beautiful display.

I have yet to build the unit - I have examined the parts & the quality is obviously very high. The instructions book is also of a high quality & contains the history of the BMW motorcycle since it's inception in the early 1900s. This is a good read. The instructions are simple & very easy to understand. . I highly recommend this product.

Era da un po di tempo che cercavo un motore in kit da costruire che fosse ben fatto ed anche di una certa dimensione. In passato avevo comprato un kit Honda 750 Four della Minicraft ed era stata una pessima esperienza, tant'è che non lo ho neanche completato... Beh, con la Franzis siamo di fronte a ben altro ! Sono contentissimo dell'acquisto: il kit è soddisfacente da ogni punto di vista: come precisione, come estetica... e poi la chicca del cambio a 5 marce funzionante... credo sia l'unico modello statico sul mercato (forse anche rispetto al passato) con cambio funzionante ! e poi è tutto ben riprodotto, lo spinterogeno che fa dare la scintilla al momento giusto... l'unica cosa a cui stare attenti è di ripulire bene alcune sbavature della plastica che potrebbero interagire col funzionamento corretto del motore... poi c'è il libro con la storia delle moto Bmw e le istruzioni di montaggio molto buone... Insomma: prendetelo, montatelo e non ve ne pentirete
