Rainforest EMU-2 Energy Monitoring Unit

I already own a “Legacy” Eagle Gateway that I use in my own home, albeit with greately-reduced functionality, now that Bidgely no longer offers its once-excellent energy analysis service to end customers. I bought this EMU-2 to install at my mother’s home in order to figure out what circuits and devices are causing her power bill to run so high.Unlike the gateway devices (either “Legacy” or the current Eagle-200, for which I’ve encountered many negative reviews), the EMU-2 does not send power data to any other device (such as an iPhone or Android device or web-service); rather, it just shows the current power usage and expense on its display — but that’s the beauty of this little EMU-2: it’s simple. It only ever needs to be registered with your utility as a Home Area Network (“HAN”) device so it’ll wirelessly connect to your power meter, and then it just shows your the data.Very handy!

Owned and activated for a couple weeks now. Took about 15 minutes to get setup with Comed.As this uses the zigbee protocol to communicate with the meter, I plugged it in next to main electrical panel to get up and running. Logged in to Comed, added the device using the id codes on the back. Got an email shortly saying it would take a day to set up. An hour later it was activated.Moved about 75 feet away from the meter in the basement, and it connected via USB to a Raspberry PI 4 running Home Assistant. It constantly reads the data and creates graphs I can review later

Worth every penny!!!! This is not cloud connected BS like other solutions. The EMU-2 Interacts directly with your Smart Meter outside your home/business eliminating all the BS of cloud account sign up. This is truly more innovation we need. A product YOU control and pay a fair price to obtain. Setup was simple and up and running in 5 minutes.***EDIT*** SCE is discontinuing new enrollments on it's HAN network effective 02/01/2020. If you're not signed up by then, this device is effectively a paperweight. Existing enrollments and devices will continue to work and if you're buying and activating before 02/01/2020, you should be good. Contents of FAQ below - which you will not find on the SCE website as it was sent to existing enrollments only.SCE FAQ Received:Will my existing HAN Device be disconnected on January 31, 2020?No. If your device is currently connected to the meter, it should remain connected and shouldcontinue to provide you wit h your usage reads. The January 31, 2020 date is specific only to new customerswishing to register a new HAN device. Existing HAN devices will stay connect ed and continueto work as usual.What if my existing HAN device disconnects from my meter after January 31, 2020?SCE will attempt to reconnect the device to the meter and re-establish your net work connection. In the event t hat SCE cannot fix the issue, you will be directed to use SCE's alternatesolutions for HAN.Will I be able to replace my existing HAN device with a new device after January 31, 2020?No. The device that is connected to the meter at the time of HAN's closure cannot be replacedwith a new device. In the event that the exist in g device disconnect s fr om the net work andcannot be reconnected, you will be directed to an alternate solution for HAN.Will I still receive the Daily Cost Snapshot (DCS) alert on my HAN device, providing my accountsProjected Bill and Bill-to-Date energy costs?Yes. As long as you are currently eligible for that feature, and as long as you r device isconnected to the meter, you should continue to receive the DCS alerts to your HAN device. Youmay also receive your projected next bill and bill-to-date energy costs by enrolling in BudgetAssistant alerts.

Worked great for a while but then wouldn't power on after a month. Not accurate for TOU billing though as you can only set it to one price.

NOT FOR PGE SOLAR NEM account holders. PGE restricts solar customers from seeing their pricing/expenses for day to day activities, this also applies to real time energy monitoring with a unit such as this.Contacting customer support from Rainforest was useless, the manufacturer does not want to and is not planning on addressing user input of pricing.. This manufacturer has discontinued the support of block pricing, otherwise known as Tier pricing so the only way you can input pricing is by setting a single rate for your electricity, same price used 24/7 to calculate your energy cost.This unit lacks any customer support, has nonsupported features that is advertised but does not work and does not work for PGE solar customers.As a PGE customer, they restrict my smart meter from automatically sending pricing to the EMU rendering this item USELESS other than for knowing the electrical usage... What a shame that the manufacturer does not want to update their firmware to allow for TOU pricing, even more disappointing is that they have removed the block/tiered pricing function capability too...Returning this item for a full refund, it is featureless unless your smart meter can automatically relay pricing information to the EMU. If your utility company restricts your meter from doing so you will be stuck with one single rate. If you are a TOU, Tiered pricing or Solar customer then you are SOL.

This is a very useful item to have on your desk. You can accurately gauge your power use constantly. It is very simple to activate through your utility if you have a smart meter. In San Diego with SDGE, my device was instantly activated once I entered the required product info on the web site. Adding the key pricing info into this device shows the real time cost of electrical things you use in your house. My unit is about 50 ft from the smart meter with 3 walls in between and I show 4 bars on the display.
