Q: Is it safe to put this unit on it's side (store vertically)? Will it stay cool?

for storage it will be fine, but not for playing

Q: Does this work in India? We have 220 volts here

Probably not - none of our major electronics are set up for dual voltage. Without a voltage converter (not the same thing as a plug adapter) you would likely have a fire.

Q: willl this sound ok with just 2 front high-quality tower speakers?

Yes john this sound real great i was surprised for my self am using a pair of polk tower speakers TSi500 with it and recently got a pair of polk psw10 i need nothing else

You can skip subwoofer but it is worth to invest a bit and buy 2 front speakers (150W), 1 central (100W) and 2 rear speakers (100W). I'm using a very old 6 ohm Wharfedale loudspekers system of this kind. The sound is beautiful especially when you play some games with good surround effects.
