You should not have any problem with this tripod accommodating your camera/lens Nikon D90 with the 55-300mm lens and hood. I own a Nikon D300 with an 18-200mm lens and hood and the tripod supports them just fine. I don't know how much your 300mm lens weighs, but my camera/lens combination weighs roughly 3-3.5 pounds. I also have a different (film) Nikon with an older (heavier) 80-250mm zoom lens that also works with the tripod but this zoom lens is has its own screw hole so I can mount the camera/lens directly on the tripod from the lens receptacle instead of using the one on the camera body. This places the center of gravity over the tripod. With my digital camera/lens combination, I can only mount it using the receptacle from the mounting hole in the camera body. Nevertheless, it doesn't feel top heavy and sits there firmly at full extension. Bottom line, it should work fine. Bernie
