Dan, I purchased the Shure M97xE High-Performance Magnetic Phono Cartridge in 2013. I'm not disappointed. I do a lot of album & 45 transfers, as well as just enjoy putting an album on while working in my shop. I tried others but to my ear this cartridge provided the best reproduction of instruments and voice. I would recommend also getting a Shure SFG-2 Stylus Tracking Force Gauge so you can set the weight up correctly. For $25 the gauge will payback in stylus costs and wear on the media. The cartridge was $70, but I felt it was better than some I tried which were in the hundreds of dollars. - Fred

It takes a 1/2" *cartridge*, which in turn will hold/come with the matching stylus for the cartridge of your choice (as long as you get a 1/2" mount type cartridge).
