Q: Do you retract them by just pushing them back into the handles? I was expecting more of a mechanism, like my cymbal brushes.

They do not retract.... What you see here is how they are. There are a couple of bands that can be rolled up to keep the brushes together but that's it. They do play quite well and I like the sound on my Cajon.... Good luck.

Q: Would these create enough noise against 8 inch hit hats for small coffee house gigs?

I think they probably would. They’re not like normal brushes. The bristles are thicker nylon so that they create more sound when they hit the side of a cajon. Out of the different brushes available, I think these are the best.

Q: Why do they have a prop 65 warning?

The threshold exposure limits that the State of California has set for many chemicals on the two Proposition 65 lists are far below the “safe” limits set by other regulatory agencies, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, various European health agencies, and the World Health Organization. When a manufacturer includes a Proposition 65 warning notice on a product it does not mean the product is unsafe. Rather, the notice is intended to inform Californian consumers of the presence of a listed chemical so the consumer can make an informed decision when purchasing the product. Q: Can these brushes be used on normal drumheads and symbols?

Don't know for sure, but I don't see why not. They might not sound like metal brushes, though.
