Great, but fast!
This book is a really great introduction for Swift programming. I had zero knowledge of programming before I purchased it; you don't need any experience to get started! The thing I was looking forward to the most was getting involved with Swift in mobile development; however, I feel like that chapter went 0-60 way too fast. This type of language is tough to wrap your head around as a beginner, and by the time I got to the game, I didn't feel nearly ready to tackle the code. However, it could just be me needing to run through a few chapters again. It would also be helpful if there were more references to material discussed earlier. All in all, great book and great introduction to the language.

Good (not excellent) book
Nope. This book gets three stars. Although I'm learning, the book has this literally "spaced out" ("temporarily and physically speaking") in the pages that follow. Ideas are spread out through the paragraphs, fluff is filled in-between the meat of the material and generally speaking, the good stuff, is good, and takes you from begginer to intermediate. But I would like to see more coverage on constrained text input in code. You might like this book. I'm not saying it's not worth the purchase, it is. And you'll learn swift. I just don't like the style. But the book is super accurate and so far, no coding mistakes and will NOT blow the beginner away. The write is caring and thoughful and doesn't give the newbie too much information, too fast. which says a lot about the authors care in crafting the book. There is a linear progression from learning the basics to gaining more knowledge using the book as the sole study guide. It's good. Buy it. But just keep in mind these few caveats.

Good resource for learning, despite typos and odd phraseology throughout
The book has been a good introduction so far. However, I didn't even get to page 10 without finding typos like, "the Apple developer *Proram*" and, "If your not already a *memory* of the..." Typos happen, and I am lucky to type one of these reviews or a short email without a typo, so I sympathize. But in a reviewed and proof-read work, this is a little off-putting. I worry about the accuracy of the content when I see things like that, especially for someone just learning the material. And for young engineers, it sets a bad example of the importance of accuracy and craftsmanship in their work. I have other Peachpit books that are all wonderful, and this is not quite to the level of the others.Still, among the Swift books I perused, I am confident this is the superior choice for learning, and can recommend it.

Good for beginners, wish it had one or 2 more examples.
It's a little on the short side, but I feel like its a good preparation for another book that is a little more in depth, or maybe the Stanford iTunes U course. If you're trying to teach yourself, its an excellent starting point. If you've been programming in any object oriented language (objective c especially), this book is a little on the low end side. If you've ever been interested in programming for Mac OS X or iOS, this is a good starting point though. I just wish it had one more example for both Mac and iOS.

A great book for someone who wants to begin with Swift
Pitre offers an insightful, direct, and hands-on approach to Swift. I read the book and felt that I had written it! When the fundamentals are being taught, Pitre's wonderful way of giving you the ability to work through the problem then showing you exactly what needs to be done. He goes through problem solving and diagnostics, development and execution, and even publishing when you get through everything. What I enjoyed most of all was the candid and simple approach to all phases of Swift. I used this as a textbook and wrote notes in my margin so that I could quickly reference each concept. Each lesson was done well and broken into step-by-step segments so each section is manageable and easy to follow.Thank you for making a GREAT book for any beginner!

Excellent introduction to the Swift language
This is an excellent introduction to the Swift language. As a previous reviewer says, the first 60-odd pages fly by, but once you get into the more meatier topics the book and the content take more time to comprehend. As someone with 25 years of software development the topics didn't need much explaining to me, but the books provides plenty of background for more novice developers.I'd recommend this if you are interested in understanding Swift, but also if you would like to have a better understanding of Mac OS X and iOS development. Its not the only book you need to develop applications in Swift, but its a very good place to start.

Excellent book to learn Programming and The Swift Language
Excellent book to learn Apple's new Swift programming language. As someone new to programming in general, the writing is very clear and explains the concepts well with excellent examples. Each chapter builds upon the topics/material covered in previous chapters. I also like the comparisons to the predecessor languages such as C and Objective-C because it gives perspective. You get to see how much more modern and readable Swift is. Overall, excellent book so far! This book is a must own for anyone looking to learn Swift. Good job Mr. Pitre!

excellent beginner's resource
I found this to be an excellent resource and introductory text for the Swift language. The concepts and topics covered were a great foundation, and the examples made sense. A few more, smaller examples would have been helpful, however you can't write everything into just one book. Highly recommended beginner's resource!

Great Book on SWIFT ...
Excellent book. Very well structured. The description and examples are amazingly clear and well explained. If you have never programmed and are not familiar with any type of computer programming, you may need to do an online search some of the topics on programming constructs. Even though the author doesn't promote the book as a book that teaches you programming, the concepts are explained so simply that you can grasp the concepts clearly. If you are an intermediate or a savvy programmer, this is still a great book as it draws the parallels between equivalent C type languages and SWIFT.I almost didn't buy the book because of a few negative comments some people have left but am so glad I didn't act on heir comments related to a few typos. It's true that those very few typos should not have been there, but the benefits of the book are so much greater that the few typos are absolutely negligible for the value the author brings you. If you aim is to learn the SWIFT language quickly and easily, then over-looking a few un-important typos, will reap you great benefits. If you want super advanced topics, then you should look for advanced books on SWIFT.This book however, delivers what it promises.I look forward to the author's next books.

The book did a good job of introducing syntax for Swift
The book did a good job of introducing syntax for Swift. I would have liked a bit more information on how to use Xcode to program a Swift app. The examples were a good start but it didn't take me far enough to have a good understanding of how to code a simple app on my own.
