Understanding Photography: Master Your Digital Camera and Capture That Perfect Photo

This was the perfect book for me. Evidentially the author has a technical background, but he provides just enough technical info to help make sense out of how the equipment works so you can do a better job of being creative. An example would be how the camera makers calculate exposure based on middle gray (p. 11). I still don't fully understand but it helps explains why I have so many exposure issues with snow, sunsets/rises and bright scenes. I have highlighted throughout the book and am now starting the second read. Thanks to the author for not going over the top with the technical stuff. You found the balance for me and you have helped me on the journey to understanding the core concepts of photography as described in p. 1.

This book is an outstanding and easy to read guide, with lots of photographs demonstrating the intended “teaching pearls,” for those trying to say something about what they see with their photographs. Not really for those documenting their travels and activities with countless selfies and quick shots from a cell phone. Allows the reader to attempt to create art with photography, which is not a simple task.

I’ve been visiting Sean’s site for years. It is an amazing site full of physics knowledge about photography. The one on stacking and how to use tilt-shift lens are eye openers to me. Nowhere else can I find such a knowledgeable person so generous to share what he knows. Hope this book will bring more people to his site.
