A thorough, versatile and beautiful guide
Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa is an excellent all-around guide. Covering approximately 364 different mammals (species and sub species) in EXCELLENT full color photos. The authors state that they've left out Bats and most insectivores and rodents, although 4 types of the more common rodents (Springhares, Ground Squirrels, and 2 types of Porcupines, represented by about 9 total species) and one type of insectivores (the Hedgehog of which 5 species are discussed) are listed.Being somewhat of a mammal enthusiast, I found numerous interesting tidbits of information in here that I did AND didn't know. Each animal has a general description which is pretty thorough in itself, and also includes good standards like color-coded distribution map, behavior notes, species status, food, habitat, and reproduction info. Additionally I liked the Identification Pointers, Similar Species, and the multiple photos of many of the listed species, including separate photos of variants, dimorphism, and similar species comparisons. The 7 pages of Skull Identification photos at the end were a great unexpected bonus.Overall very well put-together so it's easy to find species for spotting and identification purposes. A good deal of info on each species. Nice quality book with smaller, but easy to read print. Every page is either a full color photo, or a color-coded map/description page. Very easy for reference and not a chore to read through. And did I mention the quality and abundance of photos? Seriously a beautiful book. I'll be buying another one for a friend for an upcoming South Africa trip.

Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa
I encountered this book in South Africa at the game preserve where I went on a brief safari. In the process of looking for the book after I left, I found that most other guides have drawings, not photographs, to show the animals. The photographs alone are worth the price. There is also information about physical characteristics, distinguishing features to help identify the animal, habitat, behavior and rarity. Many have pictures (not photographs) of their tracks. Delightful and fascinating!

This is a beautiful book with good information on African mammals. We bought this for my 2nd grader who was doing a project on African animals. She loves this book and reads it all the time still.

EXCELLENT BOOK!
Just returned from a holiday to Kenya and wanted a really nice book on African mammals. Found this book to be excellent both for information and animal guide and as a really nice book to sit and look through. The pictures are colourful and clear and write up about each animal is interesting and informative. A great book to have on anyone's bookshelf.

Afrikanische Tiere
