If only I had owned this twenty years ago
Having struggled across the veltd and deserts of Southern and Eastern Africa in a variety of pick-ups, landrovers and cruisers for a deade starting in the late 80's, I decided to reawaken this pastime in retirement. In preparation for that auspicious day I started looking for information on how to do overlanding the right way. Out of the few books I purchased this towers above the rest. It is truly comprehensive in its extent. It offers advice to the beginner and hints and tips for the more experienced. It doesn't dwell on expensive gadgets for gearheads, but looks at the basics of overland travel, the best vehicles for the job, the accessories you will need and potential routes you may consider. A little more about using American built vehicles would be useful for the overlander in the Western Hemisphere. There are a lot more 4 wheel drive vehicles on the market now than there were ten years ago, some more infomation about using these would also be useful. Perhaps in the next edition?

More information than you can possibly use!
This is a very thorough treatise on the overlanding experience. I doubt if I will ever get through the entire book as there are portions covering subjects I will probably never need, such as overlanding travel through Africa or Asia. At 59 years old, I am just beginning to look seriously at overlanding. It will be likely I will never get to Africa, Asia, or South America for that matter. Too many constraints. However, with that being said, there is sill a wealth of information that can be applied to almost anyone's overlanding endeavors. I highly recommend this book.

Very Thurough!
Just Started reading this, but the book is very inviting and informative. It is written in a manner that makes you want to keep reading, as well as, to put it all to practice and to get out there. The author seems very thorough in realistic goals and pre-planning considerations etc.

A complete book of overland travel.
Great book, a ton of information covers everything you can think of and much that has not crossed your mind. Good reference to other information on the web and other resources, take notes as you read to maximize your cross referencing as this will save time not having to go back and find interesting information and points.

Excellent
Massive and very complete guide to vehicle expedition. At nearly 800 pages, it's far too broad reaching to summarize here, but if you've been waiting (in vain) for a third ad hopefully affordable edition of Shepperd's VDE guide, just give it up. Buy this excellent guide and get out there.

The overlanders handbook
Although this is billed as an overlanders handbook, offering advice as a worldwide route and planning guide, it should appeal to a much wider audience. Its sections on choice of vehicles, tents, camping arrangements, food and drink and so forth, all accompanied by much practical advice, will appeal equally well to campers and weekenders who do not travel outside their own country.I will never travel overland in the way the term is defined. Nevertheless I think this book is an outstanding guide even to those who only contemplate weekend camping. For real overlanders, I imagine it is an indispensable guide.

For a budding overlander, this book will make you smile!
I've read this from cover to cover and still regularly dip in and out, it is clearly written with a wealth of information sprinkled with anecdotes and pictures but all with the purpose of being invaluable to the budding and perhaps even grizzled overlander's! Don't be overly concerned with the thickness of the book, it's a relatively easy read and if a topic doesn't take your fancy right away it's easy to refer back when the information is needed because of how well written and laid out it is. Well recommended.

Landy lovers' happiness guide
Well, I bought one for my son, a Landrover enthusiast, who's planning a big overland trip in his lovingly restored Landy, then , I had to buy one for my husband! They have both consumed the thin, information-packed pages of this weighty little tome with, no exaggeration, glee.Information is practical and covers just about everything you need to know as you prepare for a trip- and a useful reference to take with you too. All based upon sound experience and clearly presented. An absolute must for anyone dreaming of taking the plunge, and their Landrover, on an expedition of a lifetime anywhere in the world.

Wow, so much good info
I received this book this morning (17 March 2011). Travelling around the world is one of those things I have been dreaming of doing for years, this book has more useful information in it than anything other book or magazine I have ever picked up. I just can't put it down, (obviously I have to type this) I just need to work out my budget then the planning can begin.

Interesting read even if you aren't going overlanding
This is a fascinating book, even for those of us who like our feather pillows and duvets, and have no intention of going 'overlanding'. There are many useful hints and tips about international travel in general, especially regarding driving in other countries, and plenty of ideas for interesting places to visit.
