Is it best to charge it every night, leave it plugged in?

Yes, if you want to have it "at the ready", you should store in such a way as to have it charging and ready to go when needed. This was NOT our practice at first and quickly learned to plug in after use to set up for next time. Ours was used in a school setting, therefore it needed to be ready at the drop of a hat :) We loved this unit and I would buy again should the need arise. I'm speaking a little in past tense as I no longer work at the school, however, I'm sure staff is still using this little gem! Hope this helps,
