Bountiful information on sites to see and places to admire

I bought this book for our recent trip to Bologna and was so glad I did. While you can get loads of info on the internet and apps, it's still nice to feel like an insider is giving you tips. This book's advice led us to one of our favorite vacation days - exploring the medieval village of Brisighella and grabbing a bottle of their exceptional olive oil! Never would have known of the place if I hadn't read it in here.

It's a good travel guide mainly geared to the modern leftist. This book resonates best with readers who regard quaint traditions such as capitalism or Catholicism from a vantage of smug superiority. Are you and your friends more enlightened than the people who built the cities you are planning to visit? This book is for you.

I love the guidebooks written by Dana Facaros & Michael Pauls! Decades ago, I used their guidebooks to France, Italy and Spain published by Cadogan, so I was happy to see that they are still active and had written this recent guidebook on Emilia-Romagna. They write in a witty, charming way (as only Brits can) that make the book a pleasure to read. And most importantly, they express a point of view, rather then dryly describing the typical tourist sites. I also brought along the Blue Guide, which usually is quite helpful when visiting artistic sites. But in this case, Facaros & Pauls were far superior. In addition, the practical information was quite extensive and helpful. I'm so happy that they are still writing guidebooks and will look for them before my future travels.

I'm a devotee of Rick Steves, but he does not do a book on the Emilia-Romagna and his 2017 Italy book does not cover it either. So, I got this book after looking it over on the sneak-peak feature and I was not disappointed. It's packed with info on the region, city by city, and the maps look the same as the ones in Rick's books. Great purchase.

Don't list as new when book is obviously used. Very free pictures and not organized by regions described in the book. Content includes a lot of history: interesting, but not helpful for traveling.

This book has everything you need, including color photos, to prepare for a trip to Northern Italy. I have really enjoyed using it to figure out which cities to visit on our next trip. I would highly recommend it.

Changed to 4 star as some of the festival/small town descriptions are really helpful. Overall, extremely detailed and knowledgeable about practically every city, landmark and region within E-R. The hotel and restaurant reviews are lacking though. A number of hotels are closed and those that are open are a bit iffy. The restaurants are a bit uneven as well.

This guide was easy to read and very helpful in planning our October trip.

More insightful than the usual round of guides it has a lot of interesting information on architecture and history. The only recommendations are spot on and the writing is clear and engaging.

エミリア・ロマーニャ州には、ハムのパルマ、チーズのパルミジャーノ・レッジャーノ、バルサミコ酢のモデナ、スパゲッティのボローニャなど名の知られた都市が多い。フェラーリやランボルギーニなどの自動車もこの地域を本拠地としているが、ガイドブック上はとにかく人気がない。普通の本屋でイタリアの旅行書を探すと、北イタリアについては周りのミラノ・ベネチア・フィレンツェの記載のみで、三角形の真ん中のエミリア・ロマーニャは高速列車で通り過ぎる空白地帯になっている。そんな中、除け者にスポットライトを当てたのが本ガイドブックである。Bradt社のガイドブックは深みのない場所は取り上げない。初めて手に取ったのは、ボローニャのホテルだったが、とても上手くこの地域を紹介しており、帰国してから次回のために改めて買ったものである。そもそもエミリア・ロマーニャは、ベネチアの東方貿易の富が流れていくポー川の流域であり、ミラノ付近まで河川輸送した後、スイスを超え、ケルン・ベルギー・ロンドンなどと北上していく大動脈の恩恵を享受してきた。イタリア随一の名家ファルネーゼ家の本拠地はパルマやピアチェンツァであり、これらの都市には美術品があふれている。特にパルマは、フランスから追い出されたインテリのマグネットとなって経緯がある。知識や芸術を受け入れる素地があったからこそ、ヴェルディが活躍し、今日音楽祭として残る。ポー川河口にあるラヴェンナは、東ローマ帝国でコンスタンチノープルに続く第二の都市として栄え、ゲルマン系のゴート族もここを王都とした。その様子はきれいに保存されたモザイク画からも伺える。隣のリミニにはイタリア人が愛するビーチがある（映画好きにとってはフェデリコ・フェリーニ監督の出身地）。引きこもりがちだったエステ家の作ったフェラーラには、インスタ映えする中世都市がそのまま残り、イタリア各地からの観光客が夜のそぞろ歩きを楽しんでいる。昔からの学生街であるボローニャには今もポルティコの下を学生がワインを片手に議論し、郊外にはイータリーが食の巨大なテーマパークを作っている。クラフトワークもこの地域の特徴だ。太古の北イタリアに興味があれば、ローマ人が来る前に住み着いていたケルト人に思いを馳せることもできる。政治的にもこの州は特殊で、ボローニャを中心に共産党の牙城である。ロンバルディア（ミラノ）やベネト（ベネチア）が排他的になろうと、この州はランブルスコを飲みながら、唯一無二を貫くのである。このように、食・美・歴史に溢れたこの州を魅力を忘れずに、それどころか「北イタリア（エミリア・ロマーニャ）」として先頭に持ってきた本書に★★★★★注）写真はほとんどないです。

Good guide book with comprehensive information

Very disappointing.
