SmallRig Universal 15mm Rail Support System with 15mm Rod Clamp & QR Plate

This is a great item to have handy when building up your rig. I use it with my Sony FX-3 and an older shoulder mount. It works great. I've also taken it apart and used the pieces to jerry-rig other stuff I've needed, and then put it back together afterwards. Small Rig makes well-made products, and the quality is top notch. It feels like you can take apart and put together over and over and it will last. So far no complaints. Good stuff.

I bought a Fotga Matte box, but my Fuji X-H1 in the Small Rig cage was too low with just the rail adapter on the cage. I looked for an adjustable rail support and this fit the bill. There was another brand on Amazon for about half the price, but I didn't like the design as well. Besides, I've been very happy with the quality of the SmallRig products. As you can see, I can now adjust the height of the camera to perfectly place it with the matte box. My only niggle is the tightener for the height adjustment and the rail clamp sometimes bump into each other. I have to slightly loosen the rail clamp, adjust the height, then tighten back the rail clamp.

This rail support system has adjustable height, which in my opinion are are going to want, whether you know it or not. It allows you to achieve “proper” LWS (lightweight support standard) dimensions between your rails and lens. LWS is just a standard, not a law, but you may find that things just tend to work out better if you have it right. My main criticism is the little extending “towers” that make the height adjustable do not seem to clamp down 100% securely to the base, so there is potentially a bit of rotational play (yaw). I was able to tighten down to my satisfaction, for now. But I probably would not put a large heavy camera system on top of this. I have a Sony A6600, with Meike cine lenses, Smallrig cage and handle, and an Atomos monitor atop it. I think most small DSLR-based systems would be OK, but one should avoid hanging a lot of weight off the front of your camera (for both the camera’s benefit, and to avoid too much stress on this rail support). In my case, I use an LWS support for my Tilta matte box, which helps distribute weight.

I built an "All-In-One YouTube Studio" on a light stand. Part of that setup includes a lens mounted Elgato Prompter. I decided to support the camera and lens with a SmallRig 15mm support system. Mount is great. Plate will rotate over time on my A7RII. It's not "quick detatch" in the sense I thought it was. Overall a good mount and I would buy it again.

This Arco-Swiss mount fits perfectly between a SmallRig camera cage and video tripod. It holds the 15mm rods that are used for video accessories and allows vertical height adjustment between the camera's optical axis and the rods. That adjustment allows long lenses of various sizes to be mounted to the rails by their "lens feet" - thereby stiffening the whole rig and eliminating stress at the camera/lens mount. Pete

Love small rig… this is not about the item it is about this orders quality control… I received a used item that was totally different than what the box said it was. Looks like someone returned this and it was just sent store me. Lame.

Good quality. Best for smaller mirror less cameras to rig up. Smooth movement when adjusting. Great quality. Worth the buy.

Smallrig has been an ample resource for camera rigging components. Anyone who enjoys building a set up that can take the camera, monitor, mic’s, V-Mount batteries all in one contraption, you this type of a baseplate to start with. It’s really helpful though to have your design (at least in basic form) thought out, maybe sketched, because you’ll need 15mm rails. They come in various lengths and the longer the are (I thing for carbon right now 40cm is the longest) and the short ones are 10cm. Remember, it’s not just about slapping all your goodies on such a build, but you need to leave some room to operate them, for your hand to maneuver within the components to reach buttons etc. and keep in mind if you will want your LCD screen popping open and articulating for its functions, longer rails gives greater flexibility. Rails are just 15mm tubes that slide into this base head. One last thing on the rails, they come in Carbon fiber and aluminum. I only use the carbon for their stiffness and light weight. But there’s also aluminum. I’ve read the aluminum ones have threads on the ends to attach extension plates, or other possible accessories. Lastly, Smallrig now makes the carbon rails, denoted with a red coloured stripe and are more expensive. These last rails I describe, are supposed to be stronger, with the red stripe highlighting some structural support beam (or something of that nature) for more heavy duty use. And, I guess they look sharper aesthetically. After babbling about all that, these baseplates are a must if you are ‘rigging’ out your camera design. I have this Smallrig model and the one made by Sirui (SC-BPS). I prefer using the Sirui, as to me it feels more premium and heavy duty (it’s can also be found on Amazon.ca). I just like their Arca locking systems a bit more and let’s be honest, when you rig out your DLSR, or Cinema camera, there is usually some significant weight involved. When I do this, I usually try to find the absolute most secure feeling clamp structure I can find. Just a peace of mind thing. Anyways, this Smallrig is decent piece for the heart of your rig and not a huge price to get started with. Just do a bit of measuring and think of how you would want things to look first so you know which length rods you should get first. Though they don’t cost a fortune and you may want more than one length anyways, get the right size if you can first. There are all kinds of gadgets you can fit on the rods fore and aft your camera. If you want to have mobile power for example, even a small V-Mount battery takes up some sizeable Real Estate. You want room to operate and be able to plug in/take out all the cords that you’ll be using to hook everything up. Recommended.
