Unfortunately, This Works:)
I've had a PH impedance study and an esophageal manometry done so there's no more mystery or fooling myself, I am an "acid reflux machine" as my G.I. doctor told me. Naturally, he had little dietary advice (except take Zantac after eating pizza... thanks), and he gave me a lifetime prescription to pantoprazole (a proton pump inhibitor, or "P.P.I." like Prilosec). I couldn't tolerate the side effects and the early research on these drugs is not to be taken lightly - unless your GERD is life threatening and it's a "risk/reward" equation - i.e. your endoscopy procedure shows a risk of esophageal cancer. Luckily, my endoscopy was clear so I stopped the pantoprazole and bought this book.Nour Zibdeh takes no prisoners with this diet so you better get your big boy (or big girl) pants on and be prepared to go cold turkey on alcohol, sugar, chocolate, caffeine, gluten, and of course citrus and tomatoes. I couldn't sleep more than a few hours in a row so I was desperate and willing. This is NOT the old fashioned diet of simply avoiding high acid foods. And it's more extensive than the Fast Track Diet (which is worth trying since you can drink on that one!). It's much more than that: combining new theories of avoiding fermentable foods and gluten (FODMAPS) with the more traditional approach of eliminating things like wine & chocolatre and other things that make life after 50 worth living...The writing is clear, to the point and efficient. I was is no mood to read some 500 page diatribe. The color coding is appreciated as well. My only criticism is the recipes which seem to be designed for people that don't cook (which is most people these days so I'm the odd man out here). I could use a bit more complexity and less sweet and more salt. But there is a chart of what to eliminate and what to eat at every stage so you can improvise. Very easy to reference.I want to schedule an appointment with my G.I. Doc and give him this book and tell him he's fired! Thank you Nour.

Rushed to print?
I’m on day 6 of the Heal diet and my reflux is doing so much better. For that reason alone I would recommend this diet. I’m following the diet in conjunction with taking my ppi (pantoprozole)However, it’s obvious that no one tested or proofread the recipes. Almost every recipe I have tried has an error in the writing. For example, the Brown Rice and Tofu with Kale on pg. 125 leaves out the tofu. The Peanut Butter Cookies on pg. 190 calls for a cup of sugar (yet sugar is on the “eliminate” list). The cookie recipe says it should take 30 minutes yet calls for a baking time of 6-8 minutes. I think it’s supposed to say 26-28 minutes as that is how long mine took to bake . The Creamy Herbed Dressing on pg. 200 calls for a time of 30 minutes to mix yogurt and herbs in a bowl. And all of the recipes that use leeks call for using the green part (which is inedible and usually tossed in the compost pile). From now on I am planning to take the foods on the “Enjoy” list and make my own recipes. It’s a shame as I’m not sure how far to trust this book, but I’ll persevere another 3 weeks and then start reintroducing foods.

The Reflux Diet Plan works!!
I followed the steps for the initial phase for 6 days (not 3 like suggested) and I knocked out 70% of the laryngopharyngeal reflux cough I have been coping with for over a decade. I was so surprised to experience such a dramatic improvement in so little time just by changing what I ate. I had resigned myself to the condition and felt hopeless. It wasn't until recently that I discovered that my chronic cough was caused by silent reflux. The doctor offered prescriptions for proton pump inhibitors and post nasal drip. I declined those drugs and began searching (with moderate success) for lifestyle changes that would improve my symptoms. Then I found this book. I followed her advice religiously and I felt better after one week than I have in years (and years!) I'm now following the second phase of the plan and have high hopes that I'll completely wipe out all my symptoms without taking a single medication. This book was a life changer. I learned the body mechanics behind reflux (stuff I didn't find anywhere else!) and that helped me follow the plan better. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is suffering from GERD or LPR!

Exactly the book I was looking for!
This book is exactly what I was looking for!I read 3 books from the library prior to this and got information about the Reflux condition I was diagnosed with. This book didn't dumb it down, but explained it in a way that really made sense, why lifestyle changes mattered, and even went into more detail of the digestive system than some other books I read written by MD's. It is very practical and easy to read.I had been given a paper from my doctor on what not to eat, but was struggling with what to eat now, especially since the symptoms weren't improving and other digestive symptoms were starting. This book answered those questions perfectly! The format is simple, organized and uncluttered and provides plentiful guidance to help me know what is best to eat (and why some foods are not) while healing my esophagus.Other books I read offered food plans that we're unrealistic or had recipes I would never make, either because I don't have the time to devote to it or because I just don't cook meals like that. This book offers simple recipies people like me actually make in real life. But best of all, it has the guidance I was really looking for to eat well and heal my esophagus. I'm very grateful for this book.

Great book: clear explanation, enlightening, helped heal reflux and more
This book is great. Some good information and explanation that really opened my eyes to understanding reflux, and how our diet contributes to that and other health issues. I followed the plan closely and healed my reflux (and most of my GI issues)—and lost 25 lbs,—without ever taking an antacid or PPI. (I don’t know if this is typical, but it was good for my health all-around.) The majority of the book is an eating plan with recipes. You have to be dedicated to follow the guidelines (it’s not easy). But it’s completely worth it if it leads to better health, general wellness and a new perspective on what we put into our bodies. Food is medicine!

Life Changing!
This book has completely changed my life in just five days. In Jan of this year, I started to get a sore throat along with heartburn. After suffering from a bout of heartburn and acid reflux many years ago, I never associated a sore throat with acid reflux or silent reflux as I’d never had it before. In March my throat flared up that bad that I thought I had tonsillitis as I had lumps on my tonsils, and my throat was so inflamed I could hardly swallow. We were in lockdown at the time, so I couldn’t get my throat looked at, but the doctor prescribed me antibiotics. After seven days of taking the antibiotics, my throat was getting worse, so they prescribed me some stronger antibiotics, which I took for a month to try and irradiate my sore throat. After the month passed, my throat was a little better but still red, and my tonsils were still swollen with marks on. The doctor said it will go away on its own now and to just drink honey and lemon. which I did. Two weeks passed and my throat flared up yet again, so I called the doctor back and he asked me if I had ever suffered from acid reflux, which I replied yes, but it was a long time ago and I did have some heartburn in January/February time. He replied that I might have silent reflux which can irritate the throat and esophagus. So I was prescribed antacids to take every day, but after taking them for two months there was little improvement with my throat, and I was getting desperate now, so I decided to do research about food that caused acid reflux/silent reflux and came across this book. After just six days of following the meal plans in this book, I could already see a significant improvement in my throat for the first time in nearly seven months. The book is really easy to follow, and the recipes are delicious. You have to be very strict and give up caffeine, alcohol and buy wheat/gluten-free bread and lactose-free dairy products and give up all your fav food for two months, but the results are worth it. Just a heads up - the book is American and measures in cups, so I would advise you to purchase some measuring cups to make it easier to follow the recipes. The bone broth sounds disgusting but tastes delicious, and the lactose-free milk, maple syrup, and turmeric drink are great for flare-ups. I have now stopped taking the antacids and have no heartburn or acid reflux symptoms since following the plan. I’m still in the early stage with the program, but the results so far are truly amazing. I can’t recommend this book enoughSuzie

A life changing, informative book.
i would have liked to give a five rating for this book due to the successful results I have gained from reading the book and endeavouring to follow the dietary requirements. Having suffered acid reflux for quite a long period and finding increased medications was not working for me, inI needed to take stock of what was the real route cause. I was fortunate to finds this book on Kindle. After the initial Stop Plan, which I did for one week I felt better, my energy levels increased and I have lost weight. However, I have issues with the foods mentioned which are often unrecognisable or not available in the UK. I understand the book is to be released here shortly and as good and well written as it is, both the measuring and ingredients need careful reviewing. All too often amounts mentioned are for more than one person and whilst one can half or quarter the amounts given, it would be so much simpler to assume only one person in a household will be on the regime(as is my situation), allowing easier doubling up where necessary. I have attempted to follow the conversion tables-as I personally like to weigh ingredients rather than use the American ‘cup’. MAny busy people with families to serve and jobs to fulfil might be put off following the strict regime without some necessary changes from the current American edition.Despite the frustrations I have continued and have one more week on the Heal Plan, desperately looking forward to starting the Reintroducing Plan.Anyone suffering from gastroesophageal acid reflux (GURD) will, like me, treat this book as your bible, or at least your New Testament. The relief I have experienced has been astonishing. It has changed my life. Nour Zibdeh certainly knows her stuff.

Very useful
This book explains the basics and the effect of foods on the stomach so that you know what to avoid and what will help soothe your stomach. The recipes are ok, but being American there are a few items we cannot purchase in the UK. The recipes are generally for two people and fresh ingredients are not often used more than once so the week's food needs careful managing to avoid waste.I am very pleased to have had the benefits of this book although the total cure from GORD was not achieved and I have had to resort to tablets.Still worth buying though so that you understand what is going on in your body.

It works but you might need another low-FODMAP reference
I'm about 8 or 9 days into the diet.PROS:(1) The explanation is good(2) the layout is clear(3) the recipes give you a good idea of what to have/avoid and different flavour combinations(4) the appendix is extremely usefulCONS:(1) There should be a warning on recipes containing high fat foods that these can trigger nausea/reflux e.g. eggs, nut/seed butter. Found that out the hard way. It's GERD 101 so I feel it should be flagged(2) This book is not disability or chronic-illness friendly. There is no way you can follow this 100% unless you spend all your time cooking. There should be a section or list of snacks and VERY SIMPLE AND QUICK meals. It's a big oversight, as sick people disproportionately suffer from digestive issues.(3) This book is not budget-friendly. It's better than most, but there's no way I can get coconut aminos or buy specific potatoes, etc.(4) I referred to other materials for guidance on substitutions and additions. You may also need to supplement the book with a FODMAP reference. I downloaded the Monash University app which is great.

Dirty Copy
Longtime sufferer. Book seems good, very straightforward, mostly common sense attitude towards reflux and ideas mixed with some IBS treatment which may work for you. Looking forward to see its effects.Unfortunately the copy I received was bent with slightly frayed corners and dirty finger marks on the inside and outer covers. Likely hung around a warehouse or some shelves for too long, or fallen on the floor a few too many times. This is a shame considering it was listed as 'new'.
