Living With Complexity

The G20 has made Patient Safety their international focus in recent years. They call it THE OTHER PANDEMIC because of its huge death toll around the world. Wears and Sutcliffe suggest managing complexity is the key to patient safety in their book STILL NOT SAFE. And no one has done a better job explaining the path to managing complexity better than Donald Norman. Everyone in healthcare needs a copy of this book to go with STILL NOT SAFE. Donald Norman's insights could save thousands of lives if we pay attention and do the things he suggests.

I really like Don Norman. This book is one of his better works. After being very disappointed with his book Emotional Design a number of years ago, I wondered if he had lost his touch. I don't think he has, he is just human and can't bat 1.000.Other reviewers will go into the details of what the book discusses, but I'll just say that as a user experience professional, I enjoyed the book tremendously. I found that a lot of the topics he mentions are challenges I have to deal with everyday and hit close to home.Good book that was fun to read. Good job Don -- keep'em coming!

Nice quality hardcover book, with great content, very easy too read.

It goes beyond saying that Donald Norman knows his stuff and this book once again proves it. He continues to amaze me with his insightful look how we humans handle complexity or rather "hide it" or simply cover it up. But its still there- underneath. Easy to read but by no means a "lightweight". A fine balance between academics and common knowledge.

We can't live without the complexity in life, but Norman prescribe the way we can harness the complexity.

The book became redundant after the first few chapters.

Anything written by Don is designers MUST READ! This is no exception!

The book is written in very fashion which masks the sheer brilliance of most of the observation in the book.

A great book which makes some nice points about the nature of designing for complexity.However it feels a little too long and rambling at times. In particular the first couple of chapters really labour the point about the difference between complexity (lots of things are complex by their nature) and being complicated (things only seem complicated if they're badly designed). It was as if the author really wanted to hammer home the central premise of the book early on in the fear that otherwise you might not understand. The irony of course is that this makes a not very complex concept seem somehow complicated...That said this is a good, entertaining, and thought-provoking book which is well worth a read by anyone interested in design.

I've read a few Norman books and I can say with no hesitation - they are all a tough read but if you can leave it for a while and pick it up again - there is always valuable information to be harvested from his work

Great book! Used it in my 3. semester project. Don't eat all the stuff that this guys says in the book without a bit of consideration and criticism, but use it as inspiration.
