Fast, reliable, easy to set up
This is a great little computer. You need a few things to initially set it up:- two sticks of SODIMM DDR3 204 pin memory (laptop memory)- a 2.5" hard drive (pick your fav SSD)- an operating systemFor hardware install, unscrew the single door. Install the memory. Screw the SSD drive onto the door (the metal door acts as a heat sink for the SSD), and slide the door in, thus plugging the SSD into the fixed SATA slot for it.For initial set up you'll also need a USB keyboard, a USB flash drive, an HDMI or DVI monitor and maybe a USB mouse depending on the OS you install. I installed Windows 7 on mine, copying an ISO of the Windows 7 installation disk to a USB flash drive. The system BIOS by default boots from the USB first, so just plug in the USB flash drive and plug in the power (there is no on/off button). I'm not sure if this was an initialization driver issue or not, but I found that plugging the USB drive into one of the four front USB slots worked better than into the USB3 slot at the back for initial booting. Once the OS is on the SSD you should unplug the USB flash drive when rebooting. You will have to use the tech support discussion forums to find a link to the drivers for your OS. On Windows 7, at least, you needed to install drivers for the graphics card and the Ethernet interfaces (two different ones) among others.Once you are up and operating, this little computer is pretty darn fast. I'm only going to be using mine as a dedicated print server, so I really didn't care about the speed, but I was pleasantly surprised when using the browser, etc. at how speedy it felt. Also nice, the BIOS by default, doesn't need a keyboard, mouse or display to boot. So it'll boot completely headless once you get the OS onto it.And yes, this is a very rugged enclosure with no venting (ie. it is sealed) at all meaning it should work well in "dirty" environments. The processor heat is dissipated via the top part of the enclosure which is a giant heat sink. The enclosure is the heat sink. Very well done.
