I used this to replace the starter motor on a 457cc Westinghouse branded generator. The original failed with burnt, shorted windings when the engine's compression release broke, and the remote auto-start repeatedly tried in vain to crank.I hesitated order this one because of the pictured plating. It appeared to be plain electroplated zinc. The starter I received had a yellow over-plating, probably yellow zinc chromate, that matched the yellow of the original motor and relay. All of the key dimensions matched the standard Chinese Honda clone, and even the casting shape appeared to very similar.I transferred the original starter relay over because it had a non-standard isolated coil and connector. That was easily done. The relay that comes with this starter has a 1/4" push-on connector, with the other connection to the relay case. It activates with about 5V, drawing about 1A, so it should work even with a weak battery.This motor vigorously cranks the engine with no sound of laboring or excessive heat generation. I don't see any reason that it's likely to fail. I'll post a follow-up if there is a failure.

It took about 20 minutes to install and has worked flawlessly so far.

What a find. Great price and works great. Perfect for my GX340. The old one was tired, installed this new unit and presto, came back to life.

Starter was back-ordered from Honda & Customer opted to take a chance, while it’s a littler lighter then OEM (probably a few less windings) the starter works as it should! Time will tell but customer has had it for 6 months on a machine used daily & it hasn’t come back, I’ll update review if that changes.

BOUGHT THIS TO REPLACE ORIGINAL THAT FAILED. BOLTED UP AND WORKS AS GOOD AS ORIGINAL. HAVE SEVERAL UNITS SAME ENGINE. WOULD NOT HESITATE TO BUY ANOTHER.

Génératrice Honda

This starter bolted right on and worked initially. Within 4 start cycles, though, it started making a low pitched hum and not engaging the flywheel. Finally, with further attempts to engage it, it smoked and stopped making noise altogether and failed to respond in any way to deployment of the ignition. The electrical connections were correctly mounted. It appears that the starter was unable to handle the amperage of the 12V battery mounted in the generator or that it had a faulty drive motor. The solenoid appeared to be working properly.
