An interesting start to a unique manga
I've heard a lot about Beastars over the last year or so, so I was really excited when I found out it was going to be released in the West. I can safely say that it lived up to my expectations! The first volume sets up an interesting story: a herbivore has been killed by one of the other carnivores at school, one he presumably trusted, and everyone is on edge. The main character, Lagoshi, is a grey wolf struggles with his carnivore instincts despite his usually gentle personality. Right away this book provides us with some intriguing story threads to follow into later volumes. The art is sketchy and less clean than in a lot of other manga, but that adds to the expressiveness and makes the animal designs look less uncanny than if they were excessively polished. Overall, I would definitely recommend checking out the first volume of Beastars.

Different from the Netflix exclusive anime.
I watched the Netflix anime about a month ago because i had slept on it and wanted to give the manga a try because the show took me by absolute surprise, i expected some furry garbage, and instead i ended up with something akin to Zootopia mixed with George Orwell's Animal Farm, the series is rife with symbolism and interesting twists and turns, however the manga and anime are very different, the anime cut or changed a lot of the content from the manga - for better or for worse, if you watched the Netflix anime i'd highly recommend also reading the manga to continue the story (obviously) but also highlight just how many differences can actually be changed between the adaption period of a story from manga to anime, as it's not an uncommon practice to cut or change content from works like these, and this is in recent memory probably the best example of that. Oh and the manga itself? great stuff, the art is very crude, bizarre and a little bit creepy, but it's growing on me, it's not the sleek looking art style they used for the show, instead characters look almost distorted at times and reminds me of the kind of art you sometimes see in 4 panel comic strips in the west, not bad though and i enjoy the differences, it means i can enjoy Beastars twice: as a manga, but also as an anime. 5/5

okay
pretty good, although some of the pages were creased and folded over. other than that, I'd say this is decent.

An amazing beginning to the series!!
No exaggeration - this is the BEST manga I've ever read. The art is so attractive and interesting to look at and the story has me gripped and ready to buy volume 2. I usually don't enjoy reading at all, but I read all this in two sittings so take that how you will!

Absolutely spectacular start to a series with some of the most intriguing world building I've ever seen and incredibly interesting characters. If you were ever just considering thinking about giving this series a shot then please do, I've never wanted to buy an entire series all at once.

Did I mention I love Legoshi? Because he’s the best thing about this story: his character design is amazing and SO CUTE and I love him so much OMG 💕

As a manga fan, I've drifted towards seinen (adult men's) comics and ignored shonen (boy's) comics because I've associated them with paint-by-numbers, never-ending fights/adolescent wish-fulfillment stories. Beastars was the series that made made me reconsider and start giving shonen stories a serious look before discarding them. Full disclosure: Beastars is a story featuring anthropomorphic animals (aka "furries"). Some of you might be willing to dismiss it there, but I'd advise against it. One of the primary backdrops of the series is the conflict between carnivore and herbivore which remind many Westerners of the Disney film Zootopia. To be fair there are surface level similarities between the stories (to the point that the author of Beastars was afraid that her work would look like a derivative), but Zootopia is targeted towards children and Beastars is targeted towards teens, so you'll see some differences in nuance very early on in this first volume. The story begin at the exclusive Cherryton Academy boarding school, with the brutal murder of a male alpaca student and member of the school drama club named Tem. This murder immediately increases the tension between the carnivore and herbivore students. In this first volume we are introduced to our three primary characters. Legoshi is a fearsome-looking, but kind-hearted grey wolf who is a member of the Cherryton Academy Drama Club's stage crew. Louis is a popular and wealthy red deer who is the head of the drama club and its star actor. Haru is a female white dwarf rabbit who awakens some feeling within Legoshi. But is it love, or predatory instinct? I won't go any farther into the plot as to not spoil anything, but anyone who picks up this volume is in for a treat. I've read a LOT of manga and this is one of the finest series I've ever encountered. It's funny, heartwarming, thought-provoking, and through its use of animal characters, offers a lens into the human condition. Many of the issues that exist in the world of Beastars exist in our own and are of greater relevance than ever. This is not going to be a short series. While this is the first English volume, the series is at 14 volumes and counting in Japan. Still, it is absolutely worth the investment.
