These lights are not like your typical fairy lights with a plastic coated wire... They are a string of metal wire with occasional tiny dots of light along it. I bought them as a replacement set for inside a vase as pictured above and they do the job well. Something to bear in mind, the lights start about a foot from the USB plug which means if you have wire going to the plug in the wall, it will be a string of lights instead. I made it a feature by running the wire along the front of the shelf to make it look pretty instead of hiding a plain wire at the back
