Xecutioners Return

The Return Of Classic Death Metal!
Obituary was one of the originators of death metal as a style, and have returned due to the recent resurgence in metal's popularity to release two albums....2005's "Frozen In Time", and the new release "Xecutioner's Return" (a nice nod to fans of the band). Although I enjoyed both, "Xecutioner's" is definately the better of the two, primarily due to the addition of Ralph Santolla's well-phrased and shred-happy soloing style, and simply the fact that this disc features better riffs, more variety and experimentation, and slightly better production. Of course, part of the appeal of this band (for me, anyway) is the dry, "old-school" metal production, but "Frozen" just seemed muddy, to me. For the older fans, the vocals are great, the low-end bottom heavy riffs are there in spades, but the addition of a bajillion solos will either help or hinder your enjoyment of this disc; as the older Obituary albums actually sound quite a bit different compared to this....there must be about 40 or so solos on this disc, and they are not the spastic, "Slayer-esque" variety, but very over-the top, in control, and flashy, which makes this sound much different than Obit's older discs. For me, that's awesome! For some die-hards, maybe not.

Not quite what I expected.
I was really looking forward to the release of "Xecutioner's Return" and was really hoping for great things because I've been a fan of Obituary since the early days, but unfortunately I found the whole thing a bit flat and "samey"...in my opinion it's probably comparable to "Back from the Dead" like Chris from San Diego wrote in an earlier review. I found that the guitar sounds got a little sludgy and weren't as crisp as say "Slowly We Rot" and "Cause of Death" (which are probably still two of the best death metal releases out there). It is still Obituary and I'm sure fans will buy it anyway, but I feel their first two releases outshine this one by a long shot...but if you love their later stuff, say from "Back from the Dead" onwards, then this'll be right up your alley.

a classic band a powerful return.
Obituary is just a classic, one of the most important acts in the death metal scene, this one was a return to arms, and just for that I think is worthy, but make no mistake it is a great work, and the price was very good.

Obituary's best ever cd
"Xecutioner's Return" is Obituary's best cd ever. The songs tear the roof off and as heavy as ever for this veteran death metal band.Former Deicide guitarist Ralph Santolla takes Allen West's place for now and totally shreds throughout the cd.This Limited Edition Box verison has a 2-sided poster and bonus track-"Executioner Returns".Don't miss out getting this Limited Edition verison of this cd.Obituary Rules.

Xecutioner's Return
Obituary is the reason why i started playing the guitar, i never heard the guitar play so thick, deep and low like that before, the sound of the guitar is very unique, that was in 1990, this album is like the old albums first time you need to get used to the rhythm and then it will be a master piece.

Executioner's Return with a bang
What a Album!!! I have been an obituary fan for a long time and i have to say it after the slightly dissappointing frozen in time, this album is a real treat.Obies are fantastic in the album, lots of heavy good old fashioned riff, tons of tempo changes makes for real good headbanging.Songs like blood shot, contrast in dead work,in your head remind you of the end complete and the good bits of obituary and the fact that metal can be good and does not have to be a wall of sound. go buy this album, you will love it.

Mucho mejor!!
Altamente recomendable.
